helpless to make right. The Cain and Abel story reveals that those of Genesis 3 did not end in that chapter. The continuing crisis looms large throughout Scripture. War, divorce, mental illness, and ecological disaster are major themes of world history outside of the Bible. Our utopian dreams continue to fade into the distant future, and human helplessness in the face of history seems to proclaim that any reconciliation must come from outside the human sphere if it is to occur at all.
